                 GIOTO /HILTON - NAKURU, KENYA

Problem statement

Situation :

This is the major and the only dumping site in Nakuru town. All domestic and industrial litter is disposed here. However, this place  is a settlement to thousands of families who live in either caves or in semi-permanent shelters thus making it a slum area located right at the edge of the infamous volcanic future Menengai crater.

Gioto/Hilton is characterized by four major human setbacks namely;

a.Lack of good education

b.Poor sanitation

c.Lack of good health services

d.High level of criminality

Social-economic activities:

Social-economic activities:

The residents of Gioto/Hilton meet their livelihood by involving themselves with the activities they can easily identify themselves with in relation with their economic status. Majority of these families survive on either a dollar or slightly more but less than two dollars.

Many household are led by young single mothers.

Together with their children, the parents involve themselves into various activities to feed their families, including;

a.Illicit brewing

  • b.Garbage collection
  • c.Prostitution
  • d.Criminal activities.

Women and girls hardly get employment opportunities either formally or informally due to lack of education amongst other reasons. They opt to brew illicit beer targeting men as their major clients. This has led to family breakdowns and other irresponsible behaviors.

Many children do not go to school. They involve themselves into either helping their parents into brewing or collect papers and plastic wastes to sell them to the recycling industries. They do this to assist in sustaining their families needs. However, the amount of money they get is not even enough to give a proper meal but also cannot take them to school, therefore illiteracy is highly experienced.

Malnutrition is a common phenomena at this area. Children hardly get good diet but something to keep them see the next day i.e if it is there. At times they go for more than a day without food.

High level of infectious diseases is experienced including HIV/AIDS and other high risk infections.

Particularly the impact of HIV/AIDS has left many orphans and single parent families  suffering.
