The Empowerment approach......

The Eliam project is a home for orphans located near Kitale-Kenya.They are not sponsored by government agencies, and rely on locals and friends for support. They provide medical, educational, councilling and much more to those children who need bursaries and help in making their way in a difficult world. The recent price rises in food stock have left them in a pretty dire situation..

They have catered for these childrens needs from when they were first brought to the centre.

By bringing the  Farmers field produce..............

And his Banana plantation yields to the Eliam project for the children......... They were able to feed while the farmer was able to invest in a maize crop in January..and also send his son to school.............

The centre with fruit. The result of unity, sharing resources.

UPDATE 23rd Jan 09  Our farmer gave out a goodly batch of Bananas over several weeks. There were eating and cooking varieties. In addition he was able to supply some beans, another staple food..

The seed planting is due end of march, subject to rain.  We hope to supply enough through sponsors, and donors, to seed the 10 to 14 acres with Maize crops. This will ensure food for the local village as well as several local orphanages.

Empowerment at its best!

Ronald has his first two students with his course starting today 15th Dec 08. The two students are both fourth form and have never seen a computer before. They are both orphans. This opportunity is something that they could only dream about. The young Ladies names are Gladys and Hillary and we look forward to them visiting these pages under their own initiative and newly aquired skills. Ronald has earned his set up bonus by completing the tasks, and the conditions applied to his case and needs. He receives 3320 kes today. A well wisher has provided a second laptop and a third has been hand delivered by a missionary from a donor in Canada.

Story one-The Farmer:

Daniel- KITALE REGION

He had a bad crop last year and was forced to rent part of his small area.

With no money to plant maize he was left with a few other stock items and Bananas.

The problem was the local markets had dried up due to the local economy.

Many families have very little or no income. The Banana crop would remain unsold and no maize seed would be available to plant in January. A vicious circle!

This is how the problem was solved........

We purchased a large quantity of the ripening bananas which gave the farmer collateral.

We then linked him with areas of need and contacts were arranged.

Our farmer made contact and they then agreed the delivery of the fruits.

Now that the circle has been broken the farmer

will be able to supply more local  outlets once his Maize crop is harvested.

Story two-The student: Ronald of Eldoret

Ronald is one of a family of nine with none in employment.

Ronald was able to start IT training  but then rising costs prevented him from continuing. The cost is 36,000 kenyan shillings per term.

By luck he made an overseas friend who sent him a used laptop, and through that came to our attention.

We then agreed a work plan with him. He,being skilled and computer literate, should set up a local tuition class and charging a minimum fee concentrate on students from low paid or needy backgrounds.

Ronald will progress and save toward his IT training and this progressive unity of resources and skills will grow. In addition he now effectively supports his family.

All it took was ONE used laptop and Unity!

He now has three and is making great steps in involving youngsters in the world of computers.
